SideOneDummy Records is a Los Angeles-based independent record label whose roster focuses mostly on punk and related genres. Founded in 1995 by Joe Sib and Bill Armstrong, who continue to run it today, the label has built a reputation for its diverse roster of artists ranging from third wave ska to Celtic punk. In 2011, the band started The Complete Control Sessions, a series of live recordings by punk bands.[1]

History

Early Years

SideOneDummy Records started in 1995 when roommates Bill Armstrong and Joe Sib were both looking to start their own separate record labels. Instead, they decided to pool their money together, about $5,000 each, rent a small office space on Melrose Avenue, and Side One Dummy Records was born.[2]

Early releases consisted of compilations featuring punk and ska bands; How To Start A Fight and Steady Sounds from the Underground, a compilation of early recordings from the Swingin' Utters, More Scared as well as releases from co-founder Joe Sib’s band, 22 Jacks.

In 1998 SideOneDummy teamed up with Kevin Lyman to release an annual compilation CD featuring acts from the Warped Tour. The 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 compilations have been certified Gold in the US by the RIAA. The 2003 compilation debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 and at #1 on the Billboard independent album chart. The highest chart position for the Warped Tour Compilation series occurred in 2004 when the album debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top 200 and at #1 on the Billboard Independent album chart.

In 1999 the label added three veteran acts to the roster: 7 Seconds, Suicidal Tendencies and Royal Crown Revue.

2000-2009

On March 7, 2000 the label released the first studio album from Flogging Molly, Swagger. In 2001 the label added NYHC veterans Kill Your Idols and street punk band The Casualties to the roster.

2002 saw the release of Flogging Molly’s second studio album Drunken Lullabies. The album debuted at #104 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #8 on the Billboard Top Independent albums chart.[3] In 2009, the album was certified Gold by the RIAA in the United States.[4]

In 2002 The Mighty Mighty Bosstones signed to Side One Dummy and released A Jacknife to a Swan. The album debuted at #131 on the Billboard Top 200.[5]

2002 also saw the beginning of a partnership between SideOneDummy Records and Atticus Clothing Atticus Clothing which was founded by Blink-182 members Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge.[6]

The partnership produced three compilations, Atticus:...Dragging the Lake Atticus:...Dragging the Lake Vol. 2, and Atticus:...Dragging the Lake Vol. 3. In 2003, Volume 2 debuted at #51 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Billboard Independent Albums Chart.

2004 saw more chart debuts. The Casualties' On the Front Line debuted at #7 on the Billboard Heatseakers Chart, and Flogging Molly’s third studio album, "Within a Mile of Home" debuted at #20 on the Billboard Top 200, and #1 on the Billboard Independent album chart.

In 2005 the label began working with Gogol Bordello, Bedoin Soundclash, MXPX and The Dan Band.

In 2006 Side One Dummy celebrated their ten year anniversary with three nights of performances at the Key Club in West Hollywood, CA. The lineup included Flogging Molly, The Briggs, Gogol Bordello, Zox, 22 Jacks and MXPX.[7] That year saw the release of Flogging Molly’s DVD/album Whiskey on a Sunday. In 2008, the release was certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA for long form video.

In 2007 Big D and the Kids Table and Hot Water Music front-man Chuck Ragan joined the roster.

In 2008, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band and The Gaslight Anthem joined the Side One Dummy Roster. The Gaslight Anthem release, "The ’59 Sound", debuted at #70 on the Billboard Top 200 and #7 on the Billboard Independent album chart. The album was certified Silver in the UK by BPI.

2008 also saw the release of Flogging Molly’s fourth studio album, Float, which Debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Billboard Independent Album Chart.

In 2009 and 2010 Side One Dummy began working with Fake Problems, Anti-Flag, Audra Mae Jesse Malin and The Black Pacific.

Current

2010 marked more chart activity with "The Wages" by The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band debuting at #2 on the Billboard Top Blues Album Chart and American Slang by The Gaslight Anthem debuting at #16 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Billboard Independent Album chart. In the UK the album debuted at #18 and was subsequently certified Silver by the BPI.

In 2011 Side One Dummy began working with The Sounds and Title Fight.

The label is also releasing a series of vinyl and digital releases under the title the Complete Control Recording Sessions.
